What is Driver Education?
DRIVER EDUCATION BASIC INFORMATION:
- 20 hours of classroom time. Students must attend 20 of the 20 hours.
- 14 Hours of in-car lessons.
- 45 Hours of at home practice.
Students
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS:
- Check your email for instructions on setting up your Driver Z account.
- Complete all 29 eLearning activities in Zone 1 (can take up to 12 hours to complete)
- Set up your co-pilot(s). The second eLearning activity will teach you how to do this.
- Make sure your co-pilot completes their Zone 1 before the first class.
- Bring your co-pilot to the first class.
Parents and Guardians
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS:
- Decide if you will accept the role of co-pilot. Co-pilots will join the online program and verify student practice time.
- Accept the email invitation sent by the student to participate in the program.
- Visit Driver Z online and complete Activities 1-6. This can take up to 3 hours.
When can you register?
- You need to be 15 ½ years old when the course begins (by the time you write your learners license in class).
- You can bring in your identity documents to receive your MPI customer number and pre-register for driver’s ed up to two years before your course starts!

What is the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program?
GDL is a three-stage program designed to help new Class 5 and Class 6 drivers, regardless of age, acquire the knowledge and skills needed to safely operate a motor vehicle. Whether 16 or 60 years old, GDL enables new drivers to gain experience under driving conditions where the risk of having a collision is lower.
The Three License Stages Of GDL Are:
L ⇨ Learner Stage—Minimum of nine months.
- Pass the knowledge test and meet the vision requirements.
- Maintain zero blood alcohol.
- Need supervising driver.
I ⇨ Intermediate Stage—Minimum of 15 months.
- Pass the road test.
- Maintain zero blood alcohol.
- Supervising driver only needed if there is more than one passenger between midnight and 5 a.m.
F ⇨ Full Stage—For the first three years.
- On completion of the intermediate stage.
- Maintain zero blood alcohol for first 36 months.
Each stage has specific restrictions for new drivers that reduce the opportunity for and likelihood of risky driving behaviour.
** DRIVER MUST WAIT 14 DAYS BETWEEN ROAD TEST ATTEMPTS (IF FAILED).
** AFTER 4TH ROAD TEST ATTEMPT, YOU WILL NEED 2 HOURS OF TRAINING WITH A REGISTERED DRIVING SCHOOL INSTRUCTOR PER ROAD TEST ATTEMPT.

- Bank Statement
- Guarantor Form
OPTION 2
Canadian Birth Certificate and a Guarantor Form plus one of the following:
- Manitoba Health Card
- Bank Statement
NOT BORN IN CANADA:
OPTION 1
- Permanent Resident Card
- Guarantor Form
- Bank Statement
- Manitoba Health Card
OPTION 2
- Certificate of Citizenship
- Guarantor Form
- Bank Statement

PLEASE NOTE:
Bank statement must be dated within 90 days and must be on official letterhead and/or contain the logo of the financial institution.
Can be either: A printed statement that is mailed to you or a printed statement that is stamped and initialled by the bank teller.
Please contact us for alternative options if you do not have these identity documents.
What is the driver safety rating scale (DSR)?
You’ll start at the “base” level on the DSR scale.
For each year of safe driving you’ll move up 1 level.
Each at-fault claim will lower your DSR by 5 levels.
Traffic convictions will affect your DSR rating depending on the conviction:
EXAMPLES:
Not obeying traffic sign: -2
Driving without wearing seatbelt: -2
Using a hand-held electronic device while driving: -5
Impaired driving**: -10 to -15
Speeding: -2 to -10
**Could result in license suspension.
